영어동화(1) 금도끼 은도끼

A Workman, felling wood by the side of a river, let his axe drop by accident into a deep pool. With his precious axe gone, he sat down on the bank and wept. Mercury appeared and asked the cause of his tears. After he told him his misfortune, Mercury plunged into the water, and, bringing up a golden axe, asked if that were the one he had lost. When he said that it was not his, Mercury disappeared beneath the water a second time, returned with a silver axe in his hand, and again asked the Workman if it were his. When the Workman said it was not, he dived into the pool for the third time and brought up the axe that had been lost. The Workman claimed it and expressed his joy at its recovery. Mercury, pleased with his honesty, gave him the golden and silver axes in addition to his own.

나무꾼 한 명이 강가에서 나무를 하고 있다가 실수로 깊은 연못에 도끼를 떨어뜨렸어요. 소중한 도끼가 사라진 나무꾼은 강둑에 주저앉아 울었어요. 산신령이 나타나 눈물의 원인을 물었어요. 나무꾼이 불행한 일에 대해 말하자 산신령은 물 속으로 뛰어들어서, 금도끼를 꺼내오더니, 그가 잃어버린 도끼냐고 물었어요. 그의 것이 아니라고 하자 산신령은 물 속으로 두 번째로 사라지더니 손에 은도끼를 들고 와서는 다시 한번 물었어요. 나무꾼이 아니라고 하자 산신령은 세 번째로 뛰어들더니 잃어버린 그 도끼를 꺼내왔어요. 나무꾼은 자기 거라고 말했고 되찾아준 것에 대해 기쁨을 표현했어요. 산신령은 나무꾼의 정직에 감동하여 원래 도끼에 덤으로 금도끼와 은도끼를 주었습니다.
