God Has Only To Announce the Consequences: The Lesson of Nineveh

I can only tell you the consequences of not reaching the appropriate number of the righteous, as well as the consequences of reaching that number. The rest is up to you.
To illustrate, I am going to tell you the story of Jonah today. God ordered Jonah to go and proclaim, “God will destroy the City of Nineveh.” Jonah did not obey and ran away from God. He went aboard a ship, which later was on the verge of destruction because of a violent storm. The crew cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. Jonah told them to throw him into the sea and the sea should calm down. They did just that.
I had a fish swallow Jonah and made him spend three days and three nights inside the fish. But I still had a use for Jonah, so I made the fish disgorge him on dry land. I ordered Jonah again to go to the City of Nineveh and proclaim the message. He obeyed and proclaimed, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be destroyed.”
Upon hearing this, all the people started to fast. When the news reached the king, he himself came down from the throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with thick sackcloth, and sat in ashes, not daring to sit directly on the ground. He prostrated himself, beseeching God for mercy, and never letting food touch his lips. The king decreed that everyone, including the beasts, be covered with sackcloth and not to eat or drink. Witnessing such repentance, God spared them.
God does not want a person who feels no regret or pang in conscience when committing a sin. He would rather have an individual who might be temperamental, quick to take action, but also quick to regret his wrongdoing, saying to himself, “Why did I do that?” To regret is a kind of repentance. As this emotion gets deeper, it becomes true repentance. If one is more liable to repent, one is more likely to be saved.
Jonah had expected God to change his mind and show mercy to the people of Nineveh. But he also worried that if the city were to be destroyed, he too would be killed. So, Jonah went out of the city, set up a shelter, and waited to see how events would unfold.
The sun blazed upon the head of Jonah, making him hot and sweaty. God provided a gourd and made it grow over Jonah, giving him shade. Jonah was very happy. But the next day God had a worm chew the gourd so that it withered. Jonah became angry.
God said to Jonah, “You were happy when the gourd grew over you and vexed when it withered away, even though you did nothing to plant it or make it grow. Though I had made up my mind to destroy the people of Nineveh, how could I not care for them when they wore sackcloth, fasted, and beat themselves crying?” This story serves as a lesson for today.
Just as God announced, “The city of Nineveh shall be destroyed,” God has only to announce dire consequences. Upon hearing this, if the people do not repent, they will be destroyed. However, when they repent, it is God who relents and saves them.

의인의 어떤 수가 미달되는 경우에는 어떤 조건이 되고 또 어떤 수가 되면 어떤 조건이 되는 걸 여러분들이 알면 돼요.
따라서 오늘 요나에 대한 것 말하겠어요. 요나에게 “니느웨 성을 멸한다.” 하나님께서 말하라 명령했는데 그 명을 어기고 배를 타고 가다가 풍랑으로 배가 뒤집히게 되는 고로, 제비를 뽑으니 요나가 딱 맞아떨어져서 자기를 던지면 이 파도가 잔잔해진다 해서 바다에 던졌지요.
그럼 이제 내가 고기를 예비했다가 그를 고기 뱃속에서 3주야를 지내게 했어요. 그를 다시 또 쓰려고 그 육지에다 토해 버린 상태에서 “이제 다시 니느웨 성에 가 네가 외치지 않겠나?” 하니 “외치겠습니다” 하여 “40일 만에 이 성이 멸한다” 하고 외친 것이에요.
그러자 온 성 백성이 전부 식음을 전폐하고, 왕에게까지 그 소문이 가서 왕 자신이 바로 왕의 보좌에서 내려, 왕의 조복을 벗어 버리고 굵은 베옷을 입고 ‘땅에 무릎 꿇을 수 없다’ 해서 나무를 땐 재를 땅에 펴고 거기에 부복하여 애곡하며 금식하는 것이에요. 전 백성에게, 또한 짐승에게까지도 그 수치스런 몸을 굵은 베옷으로 입혀 가리고 전체가 식음을 전폐하며 소까지도 물도 마시지 못하게 조서를 내려, 온 백성이 통회하고 자복하는 가운데 하나님이 뜻을 돌이켰다 하는 거예요.
하나님이, 그 마음이 진득하여 아무리 해도 고백도 안 하고, 죄를 지어도 양심에 가책을 안 받고 하는 이거 가장 미워하지요. 그러나 그거보다는 신경질형을 하나님은 좀 낫게 보는 것이에요. 왜? 바르르 하면 그대로 뭐 하다가 팩 하고, 그다음에 후회심이 강하여 조금만 뭐 하면 후회하는 거예요. “왜 이렇게 했노.” 후회하는 그게 회개의 일종이에요. 그게 조금 더 깊이 되면 진정한 회개가 되는 거지요. 뉘우치길 잘 하는 것은 구원의 가망성이 있는 게 되지요.
그렇게 하나님이 뜻을 돌이킬 거라 하면서도 만일 또 멸해지는 날에는 니느웨 성에 있으면 자기도 죽을까 봐 성 밖에 가서 장막을 하나 치고, 니느웨 성이 멸하나 하고 화를 내면서도 바라보는 거예요.
해가 들이 쬐고 이마가 뜨겁고 온 몸이 땀이 흐르는 가운데 박넝쿨을 하나 예비해 가지고 그늘을 지게 만드니까 신경질형 요나가 몹시 기뻐했죠. 그러다가 다음날 벌레로 하여금 박넝쿨을 상하게하여 그게 하루에 다 스러져 없어지는 상태가 되니 요나가 또 화를 낸 것이에요.
“요나야, 네가 심지도 않고 길쌈도 아니한 박넝쿨 하나가 생겨날 적에 즐거워하다가 박넝쿨 하나가 벌레가 먹어서 스러지는 걸 네가 애석히 여기거늘, 온 니느웨 백성을 멸하려고 작정을 했지마는 온 백성이 굵은 베옷을 입고 식음을 전폐하고 가슴을 뜯으며 애곡하는 것을 내가 어찌 애석히 여기지 않겠느냐.” 지금 교훈을 위해 예비한 거죠.
그런고로 하나님은 ‘이런 조건이 된다’ 하는 것만 공포하면 되게 돼 있어요. “니느웨 성을 멸한다” 하는 공포만 하면 되게 돼 있어요. 그러나 ‘멸한다.’ 하는 소리를 들었을 적에 그 백성이 전체가 뉘우치지 않으면 멸할 것이로되 그 백성 전체가 통회하고 자복할 적에, 뜻을 돌이켜서 그들을 구원해 주는 게 하나님이지요.
