On a summer day, when the great heat induced a general thirst among the beasts, a Lion and a Boar came at the same moment to a small well to drink. They fiercely disputed which of them should drink first, and were soon engaged in the agonies of a mortal combat.

When they stopped suddenly to catch their breath for a fiercer renewal of the fight, they saw some Vultures waiting in the distance to feast on the one that should fall first.

They at once made up their quarrel, saying, “It is better for us to make friends, than to become the food of Crows or Vultures.”

[해석] 어느 여름 날, 무더위가 찾아와 맹수들이 갈증이 나게 되자, 사자 한 마리와 멧돼지 한 마리가 작은 샘에 물을 마시러 동시에 도착했어요. 이 둘은 누가 먼저 물을 마셔야 하는지 치열히 논쟁을 하다가 목숨을 건 싸움을 벌이게 되었어요.

이 둘이 더 치열히 싸우기 위해 갑자기 멈춰 숨을 고르는 동안 저 멀리 독수리가 기다리고 있는 것을 보게 됐어요. 어느 쪽이든 먼저 죽는 편을 쪼아 먹으려고 기다리고 있었던 거죠.

그들은 즉시 화해를 하며 말했어요. “까마귀나 독수리의 밥이 되느니 우리가 친구가 되는 게 더 낫지.”
