A Traveler hired an Ass to carry him to a distant place. The day was very hot, and the sun shonestrongly, so the Traveler stopped to rest, and sought shelter from the heat under the Shadow of the Ass. As this gave only protection for one, the Traveler and the owner of the Ass both claimed it. A violent dispute arose between them as to which of them had the right to the Shadow. The owner maintained that he had let the Ass only, and not his Shadow. The Traveler asserted that he had, with the hire of the Ass, hired his Shadow also. The quarrel proceeded from words to blows, and while the men fought, the Ass galloped off.

In quarreling about the shadow, we often lose the substance.

해석

한 여행자가 먼 곳으로 자신을 태워줄 당나귀를 빌렸어요. 날이 무척 더웠고 햇볕 또한 강렬했기에 여행자는 쉬기 위해 멈추어서 당나귀의 그림자 밑에서 뙤약볕을 피하고자 했지요. 그림자는 한 사람만 가려주었기 때문에 여행자와 당나귀 주인은 둘 다 그 권리를 주장했어요. 둘 중에서 누가 그림자에 대한 권리를 갖느냐에 대한 격렬한 말싸움이 벌어졌어요. 당나귀 주인은 당나귀만 빌려주었을 뿐 그림자까지 빌려준 것은 아니라고 주장했어요. 여행자는 당나귀를 빌림으로써 그 당나귀의 그림자도 빌린 것이라고 주장했지요. 말싸움은 주먹다짐으로까지 이어졌고 그 두 사람이 싸우는 동안 당나귀는 달아나 버리고 말았습니다.

그림자를 두고 싸우는 과정에서 우리는 흔히 그 본질을 잃고 맙니다.
