The Wolf And The Crane

A Wolf who had a bone stuck in his throat hired a Crane, for a large sum, to put her head into his mouth and draw out the bone. When the Crane had extracted the bone and demanded the promised payment, the Wolf, grinning and grinding his teeth, exclaimed:

?hy, you have surely already had a sufficient recompense, in having been permitted to draw out your head in safety from the mouth and jaws of a wolf.?In serving the wicked, expect no reward, and be thankful if you escape injury.

늑대와 두루미

목에 뼈가 걸려있던 늑대가 두둑한 상금을 걸고 두루미를 고용해서 두루미의 머리를 자신의 머릿속에 들이밀고 뼈를 빼내게 했어요. 두루미가 뼈를 빼내서 약속받은 금액을 요구하자, 늑대는 씩 웃고 이를 갈면서 말했어요. “자네는 이미 충분한 보상을 받지 않았는가. 늑대의 아가리로부터 자네의 머리를 안전하게 빼낼 수 있었거든.”

사악한 자를 도울 때는 보상을 기대하지 말고 상처를 입지 않는 것만도 고맙게 생각하세요.
