The sins of lust and theft are considered the most serious in the Bible. In the time of Moses a man and a woman, witnessed in a lecherous act by two or three people, would be dragged out and stoned to death. Their bodies, thought too offensive to the sight, were burned. So it was with thievery. If caught in the act of stealing, the thief was stoned to death and burned. These two were the greatest sins.
- According to the law of liberty, if a woman looks at a man and feels even a hint of lust, she is guilty of lechery and is doomed to hell.
- The Book of James says, “You keep all the laws but one and you have broken all of them,” and goes on to admonish, “Speak and act as those who shall be judged by the law of liberty.” This law of liberty is the law of conscience. When a female has an untoward thought toward a male, she has thereby committed adultery. Likewise when a male has an untoward thought toward a female, he is adulterous. Thoughts should have no improper stirring. This is what is meant to keep the law of liberty.

Under the law of Moses, you can put out your hand and touch an object you covet without committing a crime. You could say, “I touched it because it’s so beautiful,” and that would have been the end of it. You are not chargeable yet as a thief, not until you are seen snatching it and stashing it away in your pocket, when they come and nab you, shouting “Thief!” Merely touching it does not constitute a crime. But under the law of liberty, the moment greed kicks in, regarding an object as desirable, you have committed theft.
- Also according to the law of Moses, you are guilty of murder if, driven by an excessive impulse, you actually stab someone to death with a knife. Hatred by itself, though so extreme that it fills your thoughts with a burning desire to kill, is still not murder. But the law of conscience says that at the onset of hatred you are already guilty of murder. That is fundamental, because it is where the value of religion lies. That is the basis of belief in God.
- So know that you should not offend either in thought or in mind. The Christian church promises salvation by merely keeping the Ten Commandments, but that is not enough to obtain salvation. Sin must be uprooted at the base.

- 성경에서 가장 큰 죄로 다룬 것은 음란죄와 도적죄예요. 모세 때는 남녀가 음란죄를 짓는 걸 본 증인이 두세 명 있으면 끌어내다가 돌로 쳐 죽이고 그 시체가 보기 싫어 불을 사르는 것까지 있어요. 도적도 직접 도적질하는 걸 보면 돌로 쳐 죽이고 불을 살라 버리는 정도예요. 가장 큰 죄가 그 두 가지 죄예요.
- 그럼 자유율법이란 뭐냐 하면 여성이 남성을 향하여 “참 멋지다.” 하는 생각에 조금 음란한 생각을 가지면 그 여인은 간음을 범함으로 지옥을 가게 돼 있는 게 양심의 법이에요.

야고보서에 “너희는 온 율법을 다 지키다가도 하나만 범하면 모두 범함이 되느니라.” “너희는 자유율법 대로 심판 받을 줄 알고 행하라.” 하는 자유율법은 양심의 법이에요. 여성이 남성을 향하여 이상한 생각이 들 적에 벌써 간음을 범함이요, 남성이 여성을 향하여 이상한 생각을 가질 적에 간음을 범하는 거예요. 생각이 움직여지지 않아야 되는 거예요. 자유율법대로 심판 받을 줄 알고 행하라 하는 게 그거예요.
- 그럼 모세의 법에는 어떤 물건에 욕심이 나서 손이 나가 그걸 쥔 때까지도 범죄가 아니에요. “이거 탐스러워서 만져봤다.” 그러면 그만이죠. 그거 도적했다 하는 것에 해당이 안 되거든요. 집어서 호주머니에 넣는 걸 봐야 “이놈이 도적이다.” 하고 잡지, 만져 본 것까지는 죄가 형성이 안 돼요. 그러나 자유율법은 “아, 요거 탐난다.” 하고 욕심이 날 적에 벌써 도적한 게 되어져요.
- 또 모세의 법에는 마음이 지나쳐서 칼을 가지고 찔러 죽여야 살인죄예요. 미움이 극도로 달해서 죽일 생각이 불 일 듯 일어나는 것까지는 살인죄가 아니에요. 그러나 양심의 법은 벌써 미워하는 마음이 시작될 적에 살인죄다 하는 거예요. 그게 근본이에요. 종교의 가치란 거기에 있죠. 하나님을 믿어야 된다는 근본은 여기에서 나와요.
- 그런고로 생각으로도 마음으로도 범법하지 않아야 된다는 것 아세요. 그런데 기성교회는 십계명 정도만 지키면 구원 얻는다 그거예요. 그러나 그런 정도 가지고는 구원을 못 얻어요. 죄의 근본 뿌리가 없어져야 돼요.
